Football Trials Introduction
Our Football Academy is being developed in order to invest in upcoming footballing talent and provide the network, coaching, health and lifestyle advice that each player needs to make a successful career in football. If you are looking for a career in football, and live in the our local catchment, then your best chance will be to join our fantastic Academy. The academy coaching team will be UEFA licence and members of the Football Association’s Licence Coaches Club.
About this Football Club Academy
The Academy will offer an advanced football development and education program supported by expert and dedicated staff. The Academy will use advanced technology and coaching methods to develop their players. We are actively looking for upcoming talent to join the academy, and will or can be selective about trialists.
As part of our Academy philosophy we recognise our duty of care to support the community within projects and selected programmes. It is important that we can enable the academy to be within the heartbeat of the soccer community and share experiences with groups that the centre can support. Through our local relationships we will regularly observe players, games and school soccer and view this as a key aspect of identifying players for the Academy whilst transferring our knowledge and ability to the local community.
As an Academy that will embrace a multidisciplinary approach we will take real pride in providing detailed individual support around the key roles in strength and conditioning. As part of our coaching programme players will receive regular guidance with components that support the overall physical demands for the developing player. This is seen through players in the maturation phase, specialised support, pre and post-performance. Our approach to the players understanding of dietary requirements, hydration, pre-hab and recovery is at the very heart of developing the person. These core values are key in the person understanding the demands of performance whilst progressing as a person.
How to get a Football Trial at this Football Club & Academy
Opportunities for open trials for players in all age groups do become available at various times, please remember can be based on player ability. Once the trials have been completed, you will have to be selected to have a trial at the Academy, so it is important that players are spotted in the right places at the right times.
For some players, they prefer a direct approach sending in links to videos of themselves playing football, but it is worth bearing in mind that clubs receive thousands of these videos each week and simply don’t have time to watch them all and go about their daily business, so the most effective way of getting scouted for a trial at Academy is to join a local football club or School, playing football already is highly advised if you wish to progress to a higher level.
Our scouts will regularly select young players from football schools, clubs and sessions and invite them to trial at the development centres for our Academy or teams, and anyone can play in their football schools so it offers an open door for all to get spotted. It is also particularly good planning to take your child to football schools as soon as they are old enough, so it enables them to develop their talents in line with the same level as their peers.
16+ and Adult playing opportunities for selected players to progress through the playing ranks, under the watchful eye of the Football Academy Scouts and Club Team Management.
Syllabus at Our Football Academy
The training program at this Academy will be broken into technical and tactical training, with a special module for Goalkeepers. The below demonstrates:
- The professional development phase at the clubs Academy. Professional, Semi Professional feeder system.
- The youth development phase at the Academy
- The foundation phase at the Academy
- The youth / professional development phase at the Academy
- The foundation development goalkeeper phase at the Academy
- Male and Female Football Development Trial Opportunities.
Exploring the Future of Football at our Academy
Bio-Banding is an innovative way of grouping young football players according to their physical maturity rather than their age has been demonstrated to show big benefits when it comes to spotting hidden talent and reducing injuries.
Bio-banding is a strategy which has existed for a number of years but has only recently been trialled by clubs in the UK – groups players according to their maturity level. This means youth teams are mixed when it comes to ages, but roughly equal when it comes to how physically developed players are. It is designed to avoid the David and Goliath situation whereby a late developing child is pitched against an early developed child, who has an advantage in size and strength.
Advocates suggest bio-banding should not completely replace traditional practices which group players by age. But they suggest bio-banding can be an additional coaching tool used to better identify and retain talented yet late maturing athletes and can expose early and late developers to new challenges and learning opportunities.
The Football Academy at this Football Club is considered paramount to the club’s success and integral part of our football philosophy. Youth development is represented at board level through to our Academy Football Director.
Our Football Mission
We have adopted a strategy to develop and coach the whole person to be world class. This approach is adopted throughout the club, youth to senior first team, staff to player. This is with the aim to develop not just the footballer/athlete but a rounded positive person in the community.
Our Football Academy will never consider itself finished or fully developed but consider its purpose to continually strive to set the standard of player support, and development (football, education and personal).
Football Vision
The academy vision is to produce players for the first team, year on year, with the technical ability on the field to compete at the highest level domestically, and internationally.
The club will always hold the community close to its heart and therefore the off the field behaviour will set an exemplary standard in the community and nationwide.
The club will play a type of football that is considered ‘attractive’ and technical based whilst demonstrating the club’s 7 Pillars.
The academy will not be orientated on results but players will be expected to demonstrate the competitive behaviours and positive/growth mentality it takes to deal with the demands of professional football and life.
NB: The Club understands that although the desired goal is to create world-class footballers, this goal may not be achieved by all in the system – fulfilling potential is the goal.
7 Pillars of the Academy and Football Trial Opportunities
Competitive environment for Football Trials
The academy specialises in the individual, this is evident very early in the session. The arrival activity is individualised and the tempo, expectations, feedback and interaction within the session allow the player to perform to a high standard and really take pride in their own performance.Individual player focused delivery
The ethos of this Football Academy is the individual is at the centre of the delivery and journey. This bespoke service really enables players to understand where they currently are within their game, what the focus of delivery is in relation to their game and how they can achieve the required expectation. All generated from development and evident in overall performance.Technically driven excellence in Football
The structure of the syllabus is really focused on the technical demands of the modern game. As a result the delivery and sessions generated connect the individual to the game, with great emphasis to become technically outstanding footballers.Outstanding Football Player basics
As the academy fulfils a multi-disciplined approach there is real emphasis on general outstanding fundamentals. This maybe movement patterns related to the game, cognitive understanding and thought processes, emotional intelligence to fulfil the demands of elite performance and personality of the player.Coach football ability to support player development
The academy delivers a relevant and professional service to support the player. This requires players to want to be part of that journey. Do they want to engage in development? Can they retain information? Are they proactive with their own performance? Can they be resilient and understand disappointment whilst striving for achievement?Reflection driven and Football Analysis
The systematic approach enables regular dialogue and feedback generated. Players receive honest feedback that can support short and long term goals. Evidence of performance is needed to be part of the players understanding and to strive to develop.Personal Football Player expectations
Part of the academy is to develop people. Can the player gain greater life skills, performance tools to enhance preparation and post recovery? We want our players to strive to improve all forms of their personality and value the great opportunity they have within the academy and as young people that are at the very early staged of their careers. How to get scouted by one of our Football Academy Scouts and get Football Trials?

FIGHTING CHILDREN OBESITY THROUGH FOOTBALL
FIGHTING CHILDREN OBESITY THROUGH FOOTBALL
The 1994 World Cup will be remembered for many things: the GOAT Maradona playing (albeit briefly) in his final Mundial, the dynamic duo of Bebeto and Romario leading Brazil to the country’s fourth world title, the awesome uniforms, and, of course, it was the first World Cup played on U.S. soil.
Football in the United States changed forever after that summer. In fact, in order for the States to host the World Cup, FIFA asked the U.S. Soccer Federation to create a legitimate professional soccer league, leading to the formation of Major League Soccer.
But U.S. soccer wasn’t done there. Using some of the additional funds from the World Cup, it also formed the United States Football Foundation.
After writing about the future of U.S. soccer (and the role of Latinos in it), I was interested to learn more about the role of the foundation. As I learned, the organization’s intentions weren’t in elite player development, but, arguably, something even more important.
“The mission of the U.S. Soccer Foundation is to enhance, assist and grow the sport of soccer in the United States with a special emphasis on under-served communities,” said Krista Washington, marketing and communications coordinator for the foundation. The foundation aims to meet these goals through programs like Passback, The Urban Soccer Symposium, and their flagship program, Soccer for Success.
Soccer for Success is an after-school, soccer-based program serving 8,000 kids in 10 U.S. cities (the foundation looks to expand to 19 cities serving 16,000 kids in 2012). It focuses on four key components: physical activity, mentorship, nutrition, and family engagement. The program runs for 24 weeks – 12 weeks in the fall/winter, 12 in the spring – free of charge to families and kids that attend.
“One of the hardest things to break for us, culturally, is our eating habits,” says Hector Avila, program director of the Soccer for Success site in Houston (where 97 percent of Soccer for Success students are Latino). “I call them the three T’s: tacos, tortillas and tamales.”
A native of Houston himself, Avila understands the pressures that kids like him face, not only in the kitchen, but also from the outside community. “As a kid I was a part of the Houston Parks and Recreation soccer program (the predecessor to Soccer for Success), and now I’m in charge of the program that helped make me a better person.”
There’s no doubt that the Latino community faces some serious issues when it comes to childhood obesity. This is why programs like Soccer for Success are so crucial for our kids. It gives them an opportunity to be active and practice healthy eating habits, all in a safe environment.
At a time when kids as young as seven are being signed to professional soccer clubs, it’s refreshing to see a soccer program where kids can just be kids.
So even if the U.S. Soccer Foundation is the last thing you think about when World Cup ’94 is mentioned, just know that it’s changing the lives of thousands of kids across the country .

NUTRITION PREPARATION FOR FOOTBALL MATCH
NUTRITION PREPARATION FOR FOOTBALL MATCH
Most players appreciate the need to rest and eat well during the days prior to an important match, but questions arise regarding how much to eat, what type of food and when is the best time. This includes what to eat during the few hours immediately before competition or intense training.
Carbohydrate is the key energy-providing nutrient that must be optimised during the days leading up to and including the day of competition. Attention should also be given to optimising water and salt levels in the body. However, during the 2-4 days prior to a competition, a player’s need for protein and fat, as well as most other nutrients, typically does not increase above the levels that are recommended for normal, moderate level training.
Carbo-loading Players who compete intensely may benefit from “carbohydrate-loading” for a few days. This loading of muscle glycogen to super-compensated levels can be achieved within 2-3 days by consuming a large amount of carbohydrate (about 8-10 g per kg of body weight per day; see below) at the same time that training intensity is reduced to no more than easy levels of short duration. It is assumed that a moderate to hard bout of fatiguing exercise is performed in normal training sometime earlier in the week prior to competition.
Carbohydrate in the 6-h period before playing Players sometimes find a favourite pre-competition meal that not only provides extra energy during the match, but also feels “right” in terms of curbing hunger, quieting their stomach and being convenient and practical. In low key competition, or for some players who do little running in a game, the pre-match meal need not be predominantly carbohydrate. However, in intense competitions players are generally advised to: Eat 1-4 g/ kg body weight of carbohydrate during the 6-h period before exercise.
The main “mistake” players might make is to eat too little carbohydrate (less than 1 g per kg body weight) during the 1-6 h period before exercise and then not take in carbohydrate during exercise. This small carbohydrate meal “primes” the body to rely more heavily on blood glucose, but it does not provide enough carbohydrate to sustain the player throughout the subsequent exercise. Fluid intake prior to competition Players should drink sufficient fluid with meals on the day before competition to ensure they are well-hydrated on the morning of competition.
Players should not refrain from drinking water or carbohydrate-containing fluids during the hours leading up to competition. In hot weather, it is recommended that approximately 500 ml be ingested during the 60-90 minute period before the start of the game. This will allow sufficient time for urination of excess fluid before the game begins. In training or competitions that cause heavy sweating without sufficient opportunity for fluid intake, players often benefit by drinking 300-600 ml of fluid during the 15-minute period immediately before the start of the event. These volumes should be scaled down for female and youth players with a smaller body size. 18

FOOTBALLERS BODY FAT & NUTRITION FACTS
FOOTBALLERS BODY FAT & NUTRITION FACTS
An individual’s body fat stores represent a lifetime history of the balance between energy intake and energy expenditure. Fat is the major energy store in the body, and is an efficient way to store excess energy for use in times of need. A player will perform best when the amount of body fat is within his or her individual optimum range. This will vary between individuals, and will also vary across a player’s career, so there is no single value that is ideal. If the body fat stores fall too low, health will suffer. If body fat stores are too high, the player will be slowed down by having to carry unnecessary additional weight.
It is important, therefore that players manage their food intake and energy output to achieve an optimum body size and body composition. Strategies for managing energy intake and energy balance Players should individually manage their energy stores of body fat, carbohydrate (muscle fuel) and protein (muscle mass) by managing intake and expenditure of these nutrients separately. These issues will be discussed in separate parts of this booklet.
Players should follow an eating plan that achieves their specific goals rather than relying on appetite to guide energy intake. Advice from a sports nutrition expert is often required to develop this plan. Players should have a number of separate bio-markers to monitor their progress in achieving each of their energy-related goals. Body weight is not a reliable or accurate indicator of energy balance. Monitoring body weight can be misleading, and the information can be misinterpreted. Monitoring of skinfold fat thicknesses across the season, especially when undertaken by a trained kinanthropometrist, can provide useful information about changes in body fat stores. Urinary ketones can provide a marker of inadequate carbohydrate intake.
Measurements of changes in muscle strength and endurance provide a useful biomarker of muscle development. Special concerns about restricting energy intake Although many players reduce their energy intake at times to assist with the loss of body weight and body fat, it is harmful to restrict energy intake below levels that interfere with healthy body function.
Energy availability = total dietary energy intake – energy used in daily activity/exercise There is evidence from recent research that when energy availability drops below a daily intake of 30 kcal (135 kJ) per kg fat-free mass (FFM), there are substantial impairments of metabolic and hormonal function, which affect performance, growth and health.
In females, one outcome of low energy availability is a disturbance of reproductive function and menstrual regularity.
Other problems are likely to occur in male players. Players requiring advice for weight loss or fat loss should seek guidance from a qualified sports nutrition expert such as a sports dietitian. If a reduction in body fat content is necessary, this should be achieved gradually.
Players can avoid potential problems by taking care to avoid excess weight gain in the off-season. Careful management of both diet and activity levels in the off-season and in the pre-season can help the player to reach his of her ideal weight and body fat level with minimal impact on health or performance.
To avoid irreversible skeletal damage, any female player with disruption of normal menstrual function should be referred without delay to a medical expert for investigation.
10 BODY FAT | NUTRITION FOR FOOTBALL Example of low energy availability 60 kg female with 20 % body fat = 48 kg FFM Daily energy intake is 1800 kcal (7560 kJ) Cost of daily exercise (1 h/d) = 500 kcal (2100 kJ) Energy availability = 1800-500 = 1300 kcal (5460 kJ) Energy availability = 1300/48 or 27 kcal/kg FFM (113 kJ per kg FFM)
