Any boy coming in for a trial will have been assessed and recommended by one of our Academy scouts.

We have a network of Regional and National Scouts who monitor young players playing for their Town or District team, local boys club or school.

It is through watching these games that our scouts become aware of boys with outstanding potential.

Generally our scouts do not announce their presence at games as we believe that if players know a scout is present it can affect their performance.

Through our network of scouts, we receive regular reports on players, bringing in boys with potential for trials and assessment to our Academy.

Players writing in for a trial should always include a fixture list for their current team along with personal information such as date of birth, position, approx height/weight and previous clubs played for.

Any representative honours such as schools, district or county etc should also be included.

This information should be emailed to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or write to BWFC Academy Recruitment, Euxton Training Ground, Euxton Lane, Euxton, PR7 6FA.

Please remember we receive a lot of trial requests each week and we cannot watch everyone. The higher level you play the more priority we will give your request.

    Academy Regulations

Boys under-9 to under-11 are allowed to be registered at an academy provided they live within one hour travelling distance. For boys in the under-12 to under-16 age categories the travelling time to training/coaching is extended to 1½ hours.

Boys younger than 14 and who live outside our time/distance restricted zones are not eligible for a trial.

There are stringent Rules and Regulations set by the Premier League for trials for boys born outside England. In summary, they are:

    1. The earliest time a boy can attend an Academy for assessment is at the start of his fifteenth year. We are obliged to include restrictions on suitability - that a boy can only trial if he is recommended by one of our scouts or contacts. If he is deemed suitable for assessment he still cannot register for an Academy unless he resides within 1½ hour of its base - even then the boy must not be moving into the area for that purpose i.e. it can only be for family and not football reasons e.g. maybe the parent(s) moves jobs / positions to enhance his/her career.
    2. If the boy is an EU/EEA citizen then he can sign as a Scholar aged 16, not before.
    3. If the boy is not an EU/EEA citizen then the earliest he can sign is aged 18 and even then it is dependent upon eligibility for a Work Permit.

Bolton Wanderers Football Academy is developed in order to invest in upcoming footballing talent and provide the network, coaching, health and lifestyle advice that each player needs to make a successful career in football. If you are looking for a career in football, and live in the Bolton Wanderers catchment, then your best chance will be to join Bolton Wanderers Academy.

    About Bolton Wanderers Academy

Bolton Wanderers Academy offer an advanced football development and education programme supported by expert and dedicated staff. Bolton Wanderers Academy is located at: Bolton Wanderers Football Club Academy, Lostock Hall Farm Site, Ox Hey Lane, Lostock, Bolton.

Bolton Wanderers Academy use advanced technology and coaching methods to develop their players. They are actively looking for upcoming talent to join their academy, and are very selective about who gets in, as competition is tough.

With the changes that have taken place in the football academy system. Academy Category one clubs are now free (U12+) to recruit from all over the nation.

Previously, Category one clubs could only recruit talent within a 90 minute travelling time to the academy, but the FA have reconsidered this following thinking that the best talent should only fairly be allowed to play in the best academies even if they do not live nearby. This gives the very best talent the very best chances of success, thus growing our home grown talent for the international stage.

This has seen a rise in host families being recruited at Bolton Wanderers Academy, to help house young promising talent in safe family environments.

Upcoming Fixtures at Bolton Wanderers Academy

Bolton Wanderers Academy has a whole programme of upcoming activities, fixtures and events. Check the times of each match or look up the match venue for any of the Bolton Wanderers Academy age group.

How to get a trial at Bolton Wanderers Academy

You must be selected to have a trial at Bolton Wanderers Academy, so it is important that players are spotted in the right places at the right times. For some players, they prefer a direct approach sending in links to videos of themselves playing football, but it is worth bearing in mind that clubs receive thousands of these videos each week and simply don’t have time to watch them all and go about their daily business, so the most effective way of getting scouted for a trial at Bolton Wanderers Academy is to join a Bolton Wanderers Soccer School. Scouts regularly select young players from soccer school sessions and invite them to trial at the development centres for Reading FC, and anyone can play in their soccer schools so it offers an open door for all to get spotted.

It is also particularly good planning to take your child to soccer schools as soon as they are old enough, as their competition will be doing the same, so it enables them to develop their talents in line with the same level as their peers.

How to get scouted by a Bolton Wanderers Academy scout

Bolton Wanderers Academy scouts offer players the chance to trial. Many players are lucky enough to find themselves in the right places when scouts are watching games, but Bolton Wanderers are also very aware that good talent can slip through the net, so do offer players the chances to directly contact them with the below details.

Understandably they are unable to respond to everybody due to the volume of applications, but this does serve as an effective way to alert scouts about talent looking to take their football to the next level and secure a trial for Bolton Wanderers Academy.

To get scouted for a trial at Bolton Wanderers Academy simply collect the following information:

    • Players CV
    • Covering Letter
    • Players Vital Statistics: Players position, Age, Date of Birth, Height, Weight, contact email/phone/address, current club, previous clubs, detail of any trials already attended, any representative honours such as school, districts, county etc
