FC TORREVIEJA WIN IN THE END

    FC Torrevieja 3 V 2 CF Borriol

YOU would be forgiven for thinking that FC Torrevieja should be a team without ambition. In the pervious months, due to financial constraints, four of their top players moved on to greener pastures, the squad dropped to just 16 players and few youth players were drafted into fill the gaps, when injuries or suspensions left the team without sometimes numbers to fill the bench! But with a home record that reads; ten wins, six draws and two defeats, Torry has certainly excelled in front of fans at the Torrevieja Vicente Garcia Stadium this season. This latest victory was no exception and turned into a five goal thriller, showing just how passionate and determined the remaining players are to provide fans with a fitting finale to the close of 2011/12 season. The crowds may be a shadow of former years, and that’s a real pity, because the team are playing for pride and if anything, it’s even more entertaining than when they were playing for promotion and four thousand spectators were packing the stands! Article by Keith Nicol Costa Blanca, FC Torrevieja Spain

Great game on the Costa Blanca

Corella failed a late fitness test on his calf injury, so the side virtually picked itself, with Manu recovering from illness to resume his fleet footed forays down the right flank. Torry wasted no time in testing the opposition and once more scored an early goal to set up the tie. Abel used his muscular frame to help a throw in find Juande, who in turn shifted it back in his direction. The beefy defender shot it into the roof of the net with vengeance. Seven minutes gone and Torry one up.

However, it was by no means one-way traffic as Borriol came to the match in excellent form, having won eight of their previous eleven games. In Rubén Fonte they have a real sharp shooter, who had netted 26 times already this season. Torry knew they would have their work cut out to contain this prolific number seven, but young Rafa was marshalling him well, snuffing out his obvious threat. Alongside him, Jorge was eating up everything else in the air and Torry had a resolute feel to their defensive start to the game.

Abel astonished all around the ground by adding a second shortly after the half hour mark. Juande and Ramiro unsettled the wall by both lining up to take the kick. In the end it was Juande who guided it into the danger area where that colossus that is Abel jumped first and best, flicking it unerringly into the net with Quique grasping at thin air in the Borriol goal. But Borriol were allowed back into the game four minutes before half time when no less than three players missed easy tackles and Pablo Ribes angled his body and glanced the ball expertly in to the far corner of the net, with Manolo wondering where it was!

There was more cut and thrust in the second period for FC Torrevieja, but slowly and surely Borriol began to enjoy much more possession and make more incursive inroads to the heart of the Torry defence and eventually Borriol equalised when Eixea had the freedom of the six yard area to blast home a header from a Miguel Sanshis corner. It gave Manolo no chance, but he must have been wondering, like the fans, just where his defenders had gone!

The clock ticked inexorably towards the ninety minutes with Casimiro having played his final cards of Manu Amores for Corcoles and Victor for Manu. With three minutes indicated to be added to the forty-five, FC Torrevieja made one last push. Borriol had given away several free kicks and at the death they did so again. Juande once more delivered into the danger area and as the ball came back of the post, there was Rafa, in the right place at the right time, to slot it home; his second in two games, having scored the only goal the previous Sunday at Requena.

Jubilation was the order of the day for FC Torrevieja as the crowd could scarcely fathom that Torry had pulled it from the fire in the dying seconds. Three extremely valuable points, which keeps the pressure on Muro just ahead in fourth place. Torry's next home match is on Sunday 15 April versus Saguntino, with a normal 5.00 pm kick off.
