Birmingham City Official Player Recruitment Process
The player recruitment department is tasked with the monitoring, selection and transition of players operating outside of our Academy environment. The recruitment team will work collectively with our coaches to the identification of players within the three phases of the player pathway.
The priority of the department is to recruit, develop and produce players able to reach the Academy’s core purpose. This process is player centered, focusing on the identification of players able to excel in one or more of the four corners associated to player development and, where possible predominantly recruit from a catchment area within an hour of Birmingham. The strategy will be collaborative in nature, planned and aligned to the profiles through each of the development phases where appropriate.
PRE-ACADEMY
The Pre-Academy is a development programme designed to identify, assess and nurture local talented individuals between 6 - 8 years of age. The primary aim is to develop technically gifted individuals for our U9’s squads who become accustomed to the club’s culture and playing philosophy through weekly training sessions and games, allowing for an easy transition into the Academy way of life. The major emphasis of the programme is technical development. With the use of the clubs training facilities, and a structured coaching syllabus and games programme, our UEFA qualified Academy staff seek to increase player to ball contact time in a fun, inclusive and professional environment.
COMMUNITY TRUST
The Club has a very large Community Trust scheme operating a number of local coaching programmes. The Community Trust run a shadow squad programme for U12-U14 players participating on a weekly basis in a number of local grass root leagues. There is also a full time programme for the U17-U19’s.
Players from within the Community Trust programme can be directly recommended by a member of staff for a trial period. In addition to this, each Community Trust coach working within the shadow squad and on the U17-19 programme acts as a spotter, recommending opposition players they have seen in the fixtures that their respective teams have participated in.
SCHOOLS FOOTBALL PROGRAMME
Within the West Midlands area there is a thriving schools football programme. Through community links, it has been identified that there are some young players who only participate in schools’ football and may not be observed participating in local grass root fixtures. There are a number of reasons for this, the most common being a recent move to the area or little/no parental support.
The Academy continually supports West Midland District Schools at both primary and secondary level allowing the use of the training facilities for prestigious games in their calendar. School staff are also invited to Academy CPD events in order to aid their development as coaches. This relationship means there is the opportunity for talented players who are identified by school staff to be recommended directly to the Recruitment Manager/Officer. This may lead to an observation, and if suitable, an invitation to the Academy trial process.
TRIAL APPLICATION
The Academy is always on the lookout for local talented young players. Should you or someone you know, wish to be considered for a trial please follow the procedure set forth below. Players between 9 and 18 years old are asked to send their playing CV and cover letter to the Academy Recruitment Manager and Officer.

Brentford FC Football Academy Trial Dates
Brentford FC Community Sports Trust has announced that the next trials for its Football Development Centre (FDC) will take place at Uxbridge High School. The FDC offers talented young players the opportunity to receive elite coaching– enhancing their skills in a player-centred environment.
What does the Football Development Centre involve?
With elite football coaching spanning more than 18 years, players will attend weekly training sessions at venues in Southall, Twickenham and Uxbridge. Goalkeepers are catered for with specialist coaching staff. The FDC includes term-time training in the evening and a structured development match programme against other football sports trusts such as Coventry City, Ipswich Town, MK Dons, Oxford United, Wycombe Wanderers and many more.
Plus, there are established Performance Squads as a level up from the current FDC programme. This initiative provides capable players with the opportunity to play against more skilled teams.
What is the benefit of joining the Football Development Centre?
Parents have highlighted the positive impact our FDC has had on their children.
Damian Christian, whose son attends our FDC, said: “We would like to thank the Brentford FC Football Development Centre and all the coaching staff for helping with Frankie’s footballing progress. He has thoroughly enjoyed the training after joining aged seven, the coaches and methods used by the development centre has had an incredibly strong and positive effect on him as a person and player.”
Simon Cairnes agrees: “When the boys play against other opposition, their superior skills, positioning and tactical knowledge really shines through and shows just how well they are coached.”
What is the criteria for the trials?
The trials are available to:
- boys in school years 1 to 11
- boys who live in Hounslow, Ealing, Richmond, Hillingdon and Spelthorne.
Excitingly, the Football Development Centre will run sessions from Gunnersbury Park’s new sports hub from September. The new £13.8 million sports hub will provide top-class facilities – including two outdoor floodlit artificial grass pitches.

ABOUT THE ACADEMY
Tottenham Hotspur Football Club Academy develops talented young footballers from the age of 8 to 18yrs. Following the implementation of the Premier League Elite Player Performance Plan and our Audit by Double Pass Ltd we were awarded Category One status. The Academy employs a large team of staff to identify, recruit, coach, develop and support approximately 205 talented young players.
OUR VISION
To be one of the world’s leading football Clubs renowned for a strong association with its community and a long tradition of developing young talent that plays football the ‘Tottenham Hotspur’ way.
OUR MISSION
To create an elite environment that attracts, retains and develops top quality players providing an ongoing supply of academy graduates to the First Team squad, whilst ensuring those individuals who fall short of this standard have the necessary skills and education to enable them to achieve success either at another football club or in a vocational career.
The Academy players in the Professional Development phase are full-time and are registered on Scholarship contracts, as part of their all-round education the players complete an academic education programme alongside their football commitments. Our players in the Youth Development phase combine their club training programme with attendance at their own school, this involves training evenings, weekends and during day release. The Foundation phase squads training programmes take place after school and at weekends.
The Academy education programme is in place and encourages each player to reach his full potential as he passes through the development phases. This education provision is designed to be flexible and to provide support for each player to achieve whilst remaining in their school of preference. It includes both formal and informal education which reinforces the high expectations of the Academy in relation to the ‘Tottenham Hotspur Standard’ of: Team Spirit; Friendship; Excellence; Elite Player Conduct; Co-operation; Effort and Persistence and Respect, and encompasses our holistic approach.
The Academy squads participate in the Premier League games programme along with a number of National, European and Worldwide tournaments.

Tottenham Football Academy is developed in order to invest in upcoming footballing talent and provide the network, coaching, health and lifestyle advice that each player needs to make a successful career in football. If you are looking for a career in football, and live in the Tottenham catchment, then your best chance will be to join Tottenham Academy.
How does recruitment work at Tottenham Hotspur Academy?
We have a network of scouts who work for the Club on a local, national and international basis. They look for players predominantly from Under-7s to Under-16s (the higher up the age groups, the less likely it becomes to be offered a trial – but it is by no means impossible). Once they identify a player, they recommend them to the Academy Recruitment Department, which then decides whether to proceed with the recommendation.
How do I know if a scout has been to watch me?
Unfortunately, you may never know. Our scouts are not always in club kit as the presence of a scout may put unnecessary pressure on the players, making them very nervous (this is especially true of younger players) or try much harder just because they think someone is watching them. You will only know if we make contact via your current club – we will always approach your coach or manager before making contact with a player’s parents.
What are Tottenham Scouts looking for?
OUR PHILOSOPHY
Our ethos is to recruit the best potential which can be developed by the best coaches, working in the best facilities, underpinned by the best holistic support. The Development Centres provide young footballers an opportunity and a pathway to professional football.
IDENTIFYING YOUNG TALENT
We aim to identify and recruit young talent through the Academy's extensive scouting network. This means that if one of our staff identifies a talented player, the boy (via the parent/carer) will be invited to attend one of the Development Centres on a trial basis in order to assess him.
A scout will provide you with his/her business card. Please email your name, your son's name and your contact details to the contact details on the scout's card.
DEVELOPMENT CENTRE INFORMATION
Development Centres are within one hour's travel of the Club. Each Centre is staffed by FA qualified coaches and the sessions last between one and one and a half hours in the evening during the week. Boys need to wear suitable clothing and footwear. Attendance is strictly by invitation only for players and their parents/carers.
ABOUT OUR TALENT IDENTIFICATION SCOUTS
Academy scouts are registered with the Premier League and have been CRB checked. The Academy carries out regular training to ensure our scouts are up-to-date with all the processes and procedures we operate.
Academy scouts are employed by Tottenham Hotspur and are bound by the rules of the Premier League and The Football League which means that they must conduct themselves in an ethical and professional manner, and observe the highest standards of integrity and fair dealing.
HOW ACADEMY SCOUTS MAKE AN APPROACH
A scout will talk with the parents/managers and/or teachers of a player.
We do not approach children directly and we DO NOT ASK FOR MONEY.
If you are approached by an Academy scout and wish to verify his identity, please contact the Academy via email on
We give you this reassuring information because we are aware that there are people who look to exploit the hopes of young players wanting to join a football club like Tottenham Hotspur.
Therefore, we want to warn and advise players and their families to prevent them being exploited for financial gain or other motivations.
Tottenham Hotspur F.C. Under-23s and Academy
The Tottenham Hotspur Academy was created to train and develop players from the age of eight right up to the age of 23. Many of whom have progressed through Tottenham's youth academy have gone on to sign professional contracts and represent their country at International level.
The reserves in recent times have been known as the Development Squad to reflect the purpose of producing players for the first team. Though matches are billed as under 21, three overage players are allowed which gives the club the opportunity to give senior squad players a chance to play and keep or build up match fitness, often following an injury.
They have won one Premier Reserve League South title since the league's formation in 1999 and were runners-up in the inaugural Barclays U21 Premiership League which took over from 2012.
About Tottenham Academy
Tottenham Academy offer an advanced football development and education programme supported by expert and dedicated staff. Tottenham Academy is located at: Spurs Lodge, Luxborough Lane, Chigwell, Essex IG7 5AB
Tottenham Academy use advanced technology and coaching methods to develop their players. They are actively looking for upcoming talent to join their academy, and are very selective about who gets in, as competition is tough.
With the changes that have taken place in the football academy system. Academy Category one clubs are now free (U12+) to recruit from all over the nation.
Previously, Category one clubs could only recruit talent within a 90 minute travelling time to the academy, but the FA have reconsidered this following thinking that the best talent should only fairly be allowed to play in the best academies even if they do not live nearby. This gives the very best talent the very best chances of success, thus growing our home grown talent for the international stage.
This has seen a rise in host families being recruited at Tottenham Academy, to help house young promising talent in safe family environments.
The Tottenham Hotspurs Academy
The Tottenham Hotspur Academy coaches young footballers from the ages of 8 to 18 involving approximately 150 young players, looked after by 30 full-time and part-time staff. The academy features a network of 35 scouts who are tasked with finding the best local, national and international talent. Whilst under 16, in the Youth development phase, players are coached or play in the evenings and the weekend whilst they are in full-time education. On reaching 16, the best players are offered a place in the U18s Academy on a full-time 2 year Scholarship contract. This provides an academic programme alongside their football commitments. Players will usually progress through first and second years of the professional development phase whereupon on completion, they will be either offered a professional contract or be released. Where a player is borderline or has been held back because of injury there is the option of offering a third year at the Academy by exception.
Notable players to come through the Tottenham Hotspur Academy include Ledley King, Glenn Hoddle, Peter Crouch, Stephen Carr, Nick Barmby, Ian Walker, and Sol Campbell all of whom have gone on to represent their country at international level.
The Academy Manager is John McDermott. One of the former Youth Team coaches is Alex Inglethorpe who joined the club in 2006 after a two-year spell as manager of Exeter City. In November 2012 after six years service to Tottenham he joined Liverpool to become their Under-21 coach.
I keep contacting clubs, but never seem to get invited in. What can I do to get scouted?

Tottenham Academy has a whole programme of upcoming activities, fixtures and events. Check the times of each match or look up the match venue for any of the age group.
How to get a trial at Tottenham Academy
You must be selected to have a trial at Tottenham Academy, so it is important that players are spotted in the right places at the right times. For some players, they prefer a direct approach sending in links to videos of themselves playing football, but it is worth bearing in mind that clubs receive thousands of these videos each week and simply don’t have time to watch them all and go about their daily business, so the most effective way of getting scouted for a trial at Tottenham Academy is to join a Tottenham Soccer School. Scouts regularly select young players from soccer school sessions and invite them to trial at the development centres for Reading FC, and anyone can play in their soccer schools so it offers an open door for all to get spotted.
It is also particularly good planning to take your child to soccer schools as soon as they are old enough, as their competition will be doing the same, so it enables them to develop their talents in line with the same level as their peers.
How to get scouted by a Tottenham Academy scout
Tottenham Academy scouts offer players the chance to trial. Many players are lucky enough to find themselves in the right places when scouts are watching games, but Tottenham are also very aware that good talent can slip through the net, so do offer players the chances to directly contact them with the below details.
Understandably they are unable to respond to everybody due to the volume of applications, but this does serve as an effective way to alert scouts about talent looking to take their football to the next level and secure a trial for Tottenham Academy.
To get scouted for a trial at Tottenham Academy simply collect the following information:
- Players CV
- Covering Letter
- Players Vital Statistics: Players position, Age, Date of Birth, Height, Weight, contact email/phone/address, current club, previous clubs, detail of any trials already attended, any representative honours such as school, districts, county etc
- Players school they attend
- Fixture list of your current team, including location and kick off time to be passed to scout
Once you have collated all of the above information, email Tottenham Academy via this address:

Tottenham Academy will assess your application and decide whether or not to send a scout to watch the game.

Development squad
Players who have progressed through the Academy and have shown the potential to play at a higher level are offered professional contracts and will then join the Development Squad. The Development Squad may also be joined by under 21 players signed from other clubs or free agents who have proved themselves in trials at the club. The purpose of the Development Squad is to produce new players for the First Team though breaking into the senior squad is no easy feat for a young player. As well as playing in U21 games players may be loaned out to other clubs in lower leagues or sometimes clubs abroad to give them experience and to aid their development.
As of the 2012 - 2013 season the Development squad have played in the Barclays U21 Premiership League. In July 2014 Ugo Ehiogu, former professional footballer was appointed Under-21 Team Coach following a period working part-time with the Academy.
