Football Trials Introduction
Our Football Academy is being developed in order to invest in upcoming footballing talent and provide the network, coaching, health and lifestyle advice that each player needs to make a successful career in football. If you are looking for a career in football, and live in the our local catchment, then your best chance will be to join our fantastic Academy. The academy coaching team will be UEFA licence and members of the Football Association’s Licence Coaches Club.
About this Football Club Academy
The Academy will offer an advanced football development and education program supported by expert and dedicated staff. The Academy will use advanced technology and coaching methods to develop their players. We are actively looking for upcoming talent to join the academy, and will or can be selective about trialists.
As part of our Academy philosophy we recognise our duty of care to support the community within projects and selected programmes. It is important that we can enable the academy to be within the heartbeat of the soccer community and share experiences with groups that the centre can support. Through our local relationships we will regularly observe players, games and school soccer and view this as a key aspect of identifying players for the Academy whilst transferring our knowledge and ability to the local community.
As an Academy that will embrace a multidisciplinary approach we will take real pride in providing detailed individual support around the key roles in strength and conditioning. As part of our coaching programme players will receive regular guidance with components that support the overall physical demands for the developing player. This is seen through players in the maturation phase, specialised support, pre and post-performance. Our approach to the players understanding of dietary requirements, hydration, pre-hab and recovery is at the very heart of developing the person. These core values are key in the person understanding the demands of performance whilst progressing as a person.
How to get a Football Trial at this Football Club & Academy
Opportunities for open trials for players in all age groups do become available at various times, please remember can be based on player ability. Once the trials have been completed, you will have to be selected to have a trial at the Academy, so it is important that players are spotted in the right places at the right times.
For some players, they prefer a direct approach sending in links to videos of themselves playing football, but it is worth bearing in mind that clubs receive thousands of these videos each week and simply don’t have time to watch them all and go about their daily business, so the most effective way of getting scouted for a trial at Academy is to join a local football club or School, playing football already is highly advised if you wish to progress to a higher level.
Our scouts will regularly select young players from football schools, clubs and sessions and invite them to trial at the development centres for our Academy or teams, and anyone can play in their football schools so it offers an open door for all to get spotted. It is also particularly good planning to take your child to football schools as soon as they are old enough, so it enables them to develop their talents in line with the same level as their peers.
16+ and Adult playing opportunities for selected players to progress through the playing ranks, under the watchful eye of the Football Academy Scouts and Club Team Management.

Exploring the Future of Football at our Academy
Bio-Banding is an innovative way of grouping young football players according to their physical maturity rather than their age has been demonstrated to show big benefits when it comes to spotting hidden talent and reducing injuries.
Bio-banding is a strategy which has existed for a number of years but has only recently been trialled by clubs in the UK – groups players according to their maturity level. This means youth teams are mixed when it comes to ages, but roughly equal when it comes to how physically developed players are. It is designed to avoid the David and Goliath situation whereby a late developing child is pitched against an early developed child, who has an advantage in size and strength.
Advocates suggest bio-banding should not completely replace traditional practices which group players by age. But they suggest bio-banding can be an additional coaching tool used to better identify and retain talented yet late maturing athletes and can expose early and late developers to new challenges and learning opportunities.
The Football Academy at this Football Club is considered paramount to the club’s success and integral part of our football philosophy. Youth development is represented at board level through to our Academy Football Director.
Our Football Mission
We have adopted a strategy to develop and coach the whole person to be world class. This approach is adopted throughout the club, youth to senior first team, staff to player. This is with the aim to develop not just the footballer/athlete but a rounded positive person in the community.
Our Football Academy will never consider itself finished or fully developed but consider its purpose to continually strive to set the standard of player support, and development (football, education and personal).
Football Vision
The academy vision is to produce players for the first team, year on year, with the technical ability on the field to compete at the highest level domestically, and internationally.
The club will always hold the community close to its heart and therefore the off the field behaviour will set an exemplary standard in the community and nationwide.
The club will play a type of football that is considered ‘attractive’ and technical based whilst demonstrating the club’s 7 Pillars.
The academy will not be orientated on results but players will be expected to demonstrate the competitive behaviours and positive/growth mentality it takes to deal with the demands of professional football and life.
NB: The Club understands that although the desired goal is to create world-class footballers, this goal may not be achieved by all in the system – fulfilling potential is the goal.
7 Pillars of the Academy and Football Trial Opportunities

This maybe movement patterns related to the game, cognitive understanding and thought processes, emotional intelligence to fulfil the demands of elite performance and personality of the player.Coach football ability to support player development
The academy delivers a relevant and professional service to support the player. This requires players to want to be part of that journey. Do they want to engage in development? Can they retain information? Are they proactive with their own performance? Can they be resilient and understand disappointment whilst striving for achievement?Reflection driven and Football Analysis
The systematic approach enables regular dialogue and feedback generated. Players receive honest feedback that can support short and long term goals. Evidence of performance is needed to be part of the players understanding and to strive to develop.Personal Football Player expectations

Why Maidenhead United FC Academy? Before diving into the application process, let’s explore why Maidenhead United FC is the perfect place to nurture your footballing talent. Founded in 1870, Maidenhead United is a semi-professional club with a rich history, having competed in the inaugural FA Cup in 1871–72 and boasting a legacy of developing players who shine on and off the pitch. The club, affectionately known as “The Magpies,” is a cornerstone of the Berkshire football community, competing in the National League South and running a thriving academy in partnership with the Berkshire College of Agriculture (BCA).
The Maidenhead United FC Academy is more than just a football program—it’s a holistic pathway that blends elite coaching, competitive matches, and academic excellence. With a clear progression route from the U16 Academy to the U19 squad and even the first team, players like Reece Smith and Fred Chapman have risen through the ranks to make their mark in the National League. The academy also offers opportunities for both boys and girls, with specialized programs like MUFC Performance and a dedicated women’s academy competing in the FA Women’s National League. Whether you’re a striker with an eye for goal, a tenacious defender, or a creative midfielder, Maidenhead United provides a platform to shine.
The Pathway to Trials: Your Journey Starts Here
Securing a trial with Maidenhead United FC Academy is your first step toward turning your football dreams into reality. The club is committed to inclusivity, welcoming players of all backgrounds and abilities, and offers trials for various age groups, from U10 to U19, as well as opportunities for both male and female players. Here’s a detailed guide on how to apply and what to expect:
Step 1: Understand the Academy Structure
Maidenhead United FC Academy operates multiple programs tailored to different age groups and aspirations:
• U16 Academy Team: Competes in Division 1 of the Wycombe & South Buckinghamshire Minor League, with training 1–2 times per week and matches on Saturdays. This is a key entry point for younger players looking to progress to the U19 Academy.
• U19 Academy (Men’s and Women’s): Combines football with education, ideal for players in Years 11 or 12. The U19 teams compete in prestigious leagues like the National League U19 Alliance and offer a direct pathway to the first team.
• MUFC Performance Programme: A new initiative for boys (U10–U12) and girls (U10, U12, U13), focusing on professional development within the Junior Premier League (JPL). Trials for the 2025/26 season are expected in April/May 2025.
• Maidenhead United Juniors: A grassroots program for ages 6–18, with over 52 teams and 650+ members, offering a foundation for younger players before transitioning to the academy.
• Women’s Academy: A rapidly growing program competing in the AoC Sport South East League and National Cup, with links to the FA Women’s National League first team.
Understanding which program suits your age and skill level is crucial before applying. For example, if you’re a 15-year-old looking to combine football with education, the U16 or U19 Academy might be your target. If you’re a younger player, the MUFC Performance Programme or Juniors section could be the perfect starting point.

• Physical Fitness: Trials are physically demanding, often involving 1–2 hours of high-intensity drills followed by small-sided or 11v11 matches. Focus on stamina, agility, and strength training in the weeks leading up to the trial. Practice sprints, ball control, and match-specific scenarios.
• Technical Skills: Coaches, including UEFA A Licence holders like Keith Ryan and Ed Jackson-Norris, will assess your technical ability, decision-making, and adaptability. Work on your passing accuracy, dribbling, shooting, and positional awareness.
• Mental Preparation: Attitude is key. Scouts look for players who listen well, communicate effectively, and show enthusiasm. Stay positive, encourage teammates, and demonstrate resilience, even if you make mistakes.
• What to Bring: Arrive with appropriate football gear (boots, shin pads, water bottle), and check if the trial requires specific kit colors or registration forms. Bring a willingness to learn and a passion for the game.
Step 4: Shine at the Trial
On trial day, you’ll likely participate in a structured session designed to mimic a professional academy environment. Expect:
• Drills (1–2 hours): These test your technical skills, such as passing, dribbling, and shooting, as well as your ability to follow instructions. Coaches will observe your body language and teamwork.
• Matches (30–60 minutes): Small-sided or 11v11 games allow scouts to assess your game effectiveness, positioning, and adaptability. Be prepared to play out of position to show versatility.
• Feedback: Some trials may include immediate feedback from coaches, while others will notify successful candidates later. Stay engaged and ask questions if given the chance.
Step 5: Follow Up and Explore Next Steps
After the trial, successful players will be contacted with details about joining the academy or further assessments. If you don’t make the cut, don’t be discouraged—Maidenhead United values perseverance. You can:
• Request feedback from coaches to identify areas for improvement.
• Continue playing with Maidenhead United Juniors or local clubs to gain experience.
• Reapply for future trials, as the club holds multiple sessions throughout the year.
