Birmingham City Official Player Recruitment Process
The player recruitment department is tasked with the monitoring, selection and transition of players operating outside of our Academy environment. The recruitment team will work collectively with our coaches to the identification of players within the three phases of the player pathway.
The priority of the department is to recruit, develop and produce players able to reach the Academy’s core purpose. This process is player centered, focusing on the identification of players able to excel in one or more of the four corners associated to player development and, where possible predominantly recruit from a catchment area within an hour of Birmingham. The strategy will be collaborative in nature, planned and aligned to the profiles through each of the development phases where appropriate.
PRE-ACADEMY
The Pre-Academy is a development programme designed to identify, assess and nurture local talented individuals between 6 - 8 years of age. The primary aim is to develop technically gifted individuals for our U9’s squads who become accustomed to the club’s culture and playing philosophy through weekly training sessions and games, allowing for an easy transition into the Academy way of life. The major emphasis of the programme is technical development. With the use of the clubs training facilities, and a structured coaching syllabus and games programme, our UEFA qualified Academy staff seek to increase player to ball contact time in a fun, inclusive and professional environment.
COMMUNITY TRUST
The Club has a very large Community Trust scheme operating a number of local coaching programmes. The Community Trust run a shadow squad programme for U12-U14 players participating on a weekly basis in a number of local grass root leagues. There is also a full time programme for the U17-U19’s.
Players from within the Community Trust programme can be directly recommended by a member of staff for a trial period. In addition to this, each Community Trust coach working within the shadow squad and on the U17-19 programme acts as a spotter, recommending opposition players they have seen in the fixtures that their respective teams have participated in.
SCHOOLS FOOTBALL PROGRAMME
Within the West Midlands area there is a thriving schools football programme. Through community links, it has been identified that there are some young players who only participate in schools’ football and may not be observed participating in local grass root fixtures. There are a number of reasons for this, the most common being a recent move to the area or little/no parental support.
The Academy continually supports West Midland District Schools at both primary and secondary level allowing the use of the training facilities for prestigious games in their calendar. School staff are also invited to Academy CPD events in order to aid their development as coaches. This relationship means there is the opportunity for talented players who are identified by school staff to be recommended directly to the Recruitment Manager/Officer. This may lead to an observation, and if suitable, an invitation to the Academy trial process.
TRIAL APPLICATION
The Academy is always on the lookout for local talented young players. Should you or someone you know, wish to be considered for a trial please follow the procedure set forth below. Players between 9 and 18 years old are asked to send their playing CV and cover letter to the Academy Recruitment Manager and Officer.

Brentford FC Football Academy Trial Dates
Brentford FC Community Sports Trust has announced that the next trials for its Football Development Centre (FDC) will take place at Uxbridge High School. The FDC offers talented young players the opportunity to receive elite coaching– enhancing their skills in a player-centred environment.
What does the Football Development Centre involve?
With elite football coaching spanning more than 18 years, players will attend weekly training sessions at venues in Southall, Twickenham and Uxbridge. Goalkeepers are catered for with specialist coaching staff. The FDC includes term-time training in the evening and a structured development match programme against other football sports trusts such as Coventry City, Ipswich Town, MK Dons, Oxford United, Wycombe Wanderers and many more.
Plus, there are established Performance Squads as a level up from the current FDC programme. This initiative provides capable players with the opportunity to play against more skilled teams.
What is the benefit of joining the Football Development Centre?
Parents have highlighted the positive impact our FDC has had on their children.
Damian Christian, whose son attends our FDC, said: “We would like to thank the Brentford FC Football Development Centre and all the coaching staff for helping with Frankie’s footballing progress. He has thoroughly enjoyed the training after joining aged seven, the coaches and methods used by the development centre has had an incredibly strong and positive effect on him as a person and player.”
Simon Cairnes agrees: “When the boys play against other opposition, their superior skills, positioning and tactical knowledge really shines through and shows just how well they are coached.”
What is the criteria for the trials?
The trials are available to:
- boys in school years 1 to 11
- boys who live in Hounslow, Ealing, Richmond, Hillingdon and Spelthorne.
Excitingly, the Football Development Centre will run sessions from Gunnersbury Park’s new sports hub from September. The new £13.8 million sports hub will provide top-class facilities – including two outdoor floodlit artificial grass pitches.

WEST HAM UNITED FC FOOTBALL TRIALS - LONDON - ENGLAND - UK*
Applying for West Ham United FC Academy football trials in London, England, UK, involves navigating their structured scouting and recruitment process, which does not typically include open trials. Instead, the club relies heavily on scouting networks and recommendations. Below is a detailed guide on how to pursue a trial opportunity based on available information:
1. Understand the Academy’s Recruitment Process
- Scouting-Based System: West Ham United FC, known as the “Academy of Football,” primarily recruits players through their extensive scouting network rather than open trials. Scouts observe players at local clubs, schools, or grassroots matches, particularly in East London and Essex, their key recruitment areas.
- Age Groups: The academy recruits players from Under-7 to Under-23, with younger age groups (U7-U16) being the primary focus for initial trials. Older players (U16+) are less likely to be offered trials unless they demonstrate exceptional talent.
- Player Pathway Program: The West Ham United Foundation runs a Player Pathway program with three tiers (Technical Development Centres, Development Squads, and Performance Squads) to bridge grassroots and academy football. Trials for this program are periodically announced.
2. Steps to Apply for Trials
To increase your chances of being considered for a trial, follow these steps:
a. Play Regularly at a Competitive Level
- Join a Local Club or School Team: West Ham scouts prioritize players already competing in organized, high-standard teams in East London, Essex, or nearby counties. Playing in a competitive league increases visibility.
- Showcase Your Skills: Perform consistently in matches where scouts may be present. West Ham scouts look for technical, tactical, physical, psychological, and social attributes, as well as potential for growth.
b. Submit an Application
- Write to the Academy: West Ham does not hold open trials, but you can contact the Academy Recruitment Department to express interest. Include:
- A football CV detailing your date of birth, playing position, current club, previous clubs, and any representative honors (e.g., school, district, or county teams).
- A fixture list with upcoming match dates, times, and venues for your current team to allow scouts to observe you.
- Contact Information: Send your application to the West Ham United Academy via their official website or contact details provided by the West Ham United Foundation. The official website (www.whufc.com) may have a contact form or email for academy inquiries.
- Alternative Contact: For international players or those seeking structured programs, contact Choices International, a partner of the West Ham United Foundation, at +44 2070973517 or their office at 60a Albatross Close, Off Woolwich Manor Way, Beckton, London, E6 5NX.
c. Attend West Ham United Foundation Programs
- Player Pathway Trials: The West Ham United Foundation occasionally announces trial dates for their Player Pathway program, such as the U7 and U8 trials scheduled for July 10, 2025, at the West Ham United Foundation Pitch in Newham (cost: GBP4.00). These trials are for players aged 5-8 (Year 2 or 3 in September 2025). Check the Foundation’s website (foundation.whufc.com) for updates on trial dates and registration.
- Holiday Hammers Summer Camps: These camps, like the one running July 21-25, 2025, at Bobby Moore Academy Primary School (ages 5-16, cost: GBP25.00), provide a chance to train with West Ham coaches and potentially be scouted. Book via the Foundation’s website.
- Elite Soccer Camps: For players aged 11-17, West Ham United Foundation offers elite soccer camps in July at the Bobby Moore Sports Hub in Parsloes Park, East London. These camps focus on high-performance training and may lead to further scouting opportunities. Contact +44 330 027 2418 or check www.looking-for-soccer.com for booking.
d. Register with Third-Party Trial Organizations
- UK Football Trials: Organizations like UK Football Trials host events where West Ham scouts may attend. For example, players like Kwame Danso (aged 14) and Harry Lee (aged 11) secured trials with West Ham through such events. Register at www.ukfootballtrials.com to participate in their trial events in London.
- Tony’s Soccer School: This platform provides information on trial opportunities and application processes for West Ham’s academy across various age groups (U7-U23). Check www.tonys-soccer-school.net for guidance and updates.
e. Consider International or High-Performance Programs
- International Academy Programs: For international players, the West Ham United Foundation International Soccer Academy offers high-performance programs (3, 6, or 9 months) for ages 16-22, based at their training facilities in East London. These include trials and scholarship opportunities. Contact Choices International for details.
- Visa Requirements: Non-UK citizens may need a standard visitor visa for trials or camps. Visit www.gov.uk/standard-visitor-visa for more information.
3. Key Tips for Success
- Be Patient and Persistent: West Ham’s academy emphasizes long-term development over immediate selection. Even if not selected initially, players may be placed in the Player Pathway’s lower tiers (e.g., Technical Development Centres) for further development.
- Focus on Holistic Development: The academy values technical skills, tactical understanding, physical fitness, mental resilience, and social attributes. Attend workshops on nutrition, injury prevention, and mental preparation offered by the Foundation.
- Leverage Local Connections: Playing for a grassroots club partnered with West Ham (e.g., in East London or Essex) increases your chances of being noticed. The Foundation collaborates with local clubs to support player development.
- Prepare Professionally: For trials or camps, bring appropriate gear (shin pads, footwear, clothing), a packed lunch, and a water bottle. For residential programs, accommodation options like UCL Residence or University of the Arts in London are available.
4. Key Contacts and Locations
- West Ham United Foundation:
- Address: 60a Albatross Close, Off Woolwich Manor Way, Beckton, London, E6 5NX
- Phone: +44 2070973517 (Choices International) or +44 330 027 2418 (soccer camps)
- Website: foundation.whufc.com
- Training Facilities:
- Bobby Moore Sports Hub, Parsloes Park, East London (main camp and trial venue)
- West Ham United Foundation Pitch, Newham
- Chadwell Heath facilities (for high-performance programs)
- Official Club Website: www.whufc.com for general inquiries
5. Upcoming Trial and Camp Dates (2025)
- U7 Trials (Year 2 in September 2025): July 10, 2025, 5:00 PM-6:30 PM, Newham, GBP4.00
- U8 Trials (Year 3 in September 2025): July 10, 2025, 5:00 PM-6:30 PM, Newham, GBP4.00
- Holiday Hammers Summer Camps (Week 1): July 21-25, 2025, 9:00 AM-3:00 PM, Bobby Moore Academy Primary, Newham, ages 5-16, GBP25.00
- Elite Soccer Camps: Throughout July 2025, Bobby Moore Sports Hub, ages 11-17, check www.looking-for-soccer.com for exact dates and prices
6. Additional Notes
- No Guaranteed Entry: Trials are not a pass-or-fail process but an opportunity to be placed in the appropriate tier of the Player Pathway based on performance and potential.
- Scholarship Opportunities: Exceptional players may earn scholarships for long-term programs, particularly in the 3, 6, or 9-month high-performance courses.
- Safety and Supervision: All West Ham United Foundation camps and trials ensure 24/7 supervision by professional, UEFA-certified coaches.
- Cost Considerations: Trial fees (e.g., GBP4.00 for U7/U8) and camp fees (e.g., GBP25.00 for summer camps) are relatively affordable, but long-term programs or residential camps may require additional investment. Accommodation is not included in some programs, so contact organizers for tailored quotations.
7. Critical Considerations
- Competitive Environment: West Ham’s academy is a Category 1 program, meaning it’s highly competitive. Only players with significant potential are selected, and resilience is key.
- Avoid Unverified Sources: Be cautious of third-party websites claiming to offer direct trials. Always verify opportunities through official channels (www.whufc.com or foundation.whufc.com).
- Parental Support: For younger players, parental involvement (e.g., providing fixture lists or attending trial events) is crucial for coordination and support.
By playing at a high level locally, submitting a detailed application, and participating in Foundation programs or third-party trials, you can maximize your chances of being noticed by West Ham United’s Academy. Regularly check the West Ham United Foundation website for trial announcements and prepare thoroughly for any opportunity.
