The Woking FC Academy has been operating in its current format for over 10 years with the aim of helping talented young footballers, aged 16-19, make progress in their sporting careers whilst continuing with their academic studies.
For the 2014/15 season the Academy will operate out of Woking College and Guildford County School offering subjects which range from 'A' Levels to Sports Coaching courses whilst in addition they are also able to offer a limited number of places to boys who wish to be educated elsewhere. The scheme includes 6 hours of coaching per week by fully-qualified UEFA 'A' and 'B' licensed coaches alongside the choice of academic studies.
The Academy will be running four teams in the following Leagues this season: U18 Ryman Youth League; U19 British Colleges League (Woking College) and two sides in the U19 Football Conference Youth Alliance League. Some boys may also have the chance to play Ryman South football with Corinthian Casuals.
Garry’s current first team squad includes four players who have come through the Academy, namely, Kevin Betsy, Aaron Howe, Giuseppe Sole and Joe McNerney. Ross Worner, currently back at Woking on-loan, from AFC Wimbledon, is another Woking Academy graduate. In addition to Ross, there are a further four Academy graduates currently playing in the Football League; Mustapha Carayol (Middlesborough), Chris Hussey (Bury), Ollie Palmer (Mansfield) and Delano Sam-Yorke (Cambridge United).
The Ryman Youth League side also represent the club in the prestigious FA Youth Cup competition, reaching the 2nd round proper for the last two seasons, an impressive achievement considering there is no seeding at all in the qualifying competition at youth level; resulting in a minimum of 4 wins being required to reach the main competition!
